Dear Rare Pairs author,
First, I would like to say thank you for the time and effort that you are willing to put into writing for me! Length of fandom sections or the order the fandoms are in is no indication of how much I want fic for any given fandom; I would be ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED to receive fic in any of the fandoms I asked for. Optional details are optional, of course, but if you're like me and like to have lots of info to work with, I've tried to provide some details on the sorts of things I like (and don't) and give prompts for each of my fandoms.
- Outside of any ships I ask for specifically, I have a preference for slash as a general rule. I'm good with slash, het or fem for background ships!
- All ratings up to R.
- A focus on the romantic/emotional aspect of a relationship and some semblance of a plot/point rather than just sex.
- Unrequited (or secretly requited) pining.
- Complicated relationship dynamics, love triangles, relationships that take some effort/time to work, loving each other but because [insert reasons here] not always being able to be together/communicate those feelings, etc in this vain.
- UST. Eventually resolved is probably better than not, however, not a must-have.
- Conversely from the above – romantic partners who just can’t help but adore each other.
- Kissing, hugging, holding hands, non-sexual physical contact in general.
- Praise kink (in the sense that there’s a lot of emotional investment in and getting-off on getting praised or otherwise acknowledged as worthwhile. Works especially well with characters who are deeply insecure. I’m generally fond of other related things, such as body worship, partners being encouraging during sex in a very sweet, reassuring way, etc).
- Threesomes/moresomes and polyamory.
- Incest (unless specifically asked for or explicitly canon).
- Parings with large age disparity (over 15 years) unless specifically asked for.
- Pedophilia (please keep minors in sexual/romantic relationships with adults 16 and over; one-sided teenage crushes on adults are fine; sex where both partners are teens, 14-15 is ok if treated appropriately).
- NC-17 and PWPs.
- BDSM, omegaverse, and most kink. (NOT included in this: foreplay; bantery/lighthearted roleplay for the purposes of foreplay; preferences for a certain sexual position, fascination with a partner’s physical trait, such as, e.g., preferring redheads or virgins or younger partners or being fascinated by someone’s shoulders; rough/aggressive/desperate sex or outside-of-bedroom inequalities that transfer into the bedroom, even though there may be pining down of wrists or some other element that could be considered a kink or part of BDSM; anything specifically listed as a “like”).
- Foot fetishes (I know I said liking specific body parts is fine, but feet are the exception).
- Humiliation (both sexual and not).
- Non-con/rape (dub-con that leans toward/ends up as consensual is ok).
- Mpreg; cross-dressing; genderbending/genderswap.
Genres/Themes (and such):
- Angst, drama. (Please don’t try to use this as a challenge to see how many angst/dark tropes you can fit into a single fic. I have no issue with dark themes, angst is my crack and things like character death don’t bother me, but if it feels like it’s just a marathon of horrible things happening with no light anywhere to be seen…that’s a little too intense for me.)
- Humor is fun too, but I like it more as an element in the story rather than a story that sets out to be funny first and foremost.
- LOYALTY KINK! Themes of loyalty in general. Protectiveness.
- Friendship, family (dynamics), platonic love.
- Fluff, banter, cuddling/snuggling, kissing, general adorableness (and adoration!).
- Well-rounded characters, characters with emotions/sympathetic motives; the “other side of the story”.
- Politics, intrigue.
- Plot, long!fic. (I am absolutely not expecting to receive longfic, but I've seen some people say that they feel unsure about gifting longfic because they're unsure if the recip would enjoy it. So, in case you ARE thinking of writing longfic - please do!)
- Crack!fic, parody.
- AUs that subvert the universe or drastically change the setting (eg: genderswaping the cast, setting a modern fandom as a fairytale, turning a historical fandom all Sifi, Coffee Shop/College AUs, etc. This includes stuff like A/B/O and inserting magic/supernatural elements into a non-magic/supernatural universe).
- Time travel.
- Apocalypse/post-apocalypse scenarios, regardless of whether done as an AU or some kind of post-canon possibility thing.
- Character bashing. (Especially with requested characters.)
- Graphic gore and violence. Horror.
- Torture. (Mentions are fine if torture is something that happens in canon. BUT no deaths/executions by torture – eg: drawing and quartering – whatsoever. No torture of requested characters whatsoever.)
- Humiliation; any sort of glorification of bullying.
- Narrative implications that “sex = love” or that romantic partners HAVE to have sex to have a “valid” relationship or to be “really” in love with each other.
Aimeric/Jord. Aimeric is a tragic character to me. He’s abused, then manipulated. His trauma response leaves him more vulnerable than Laurent. He gets caught up in a civil war and tries to do a brave thing (when you look at it from his side of the political divide) and it ends horribly. He ends up stuck between a manipulative “lover” and his family on one side and a man he’s come to love who genuinely loves him back but also a Prince he despises on the other. It’s all delightfully juicy angst but also terribly sad. Aimeric makes a lot of sense to me.
I would love me some Jord/Aimeric fluff or flangst or hurt/comfort. Jord/Aimeric hits all of my OTP kinks. I love how they work together, I love the difference in social power and yet the reverse difference in emotional vulnerability. I also just love Jord. I love how much Jord loves Aimeric. If you just want to write something utterly heartbreaking: Jord dealing with Aimeric’s death and realizing that despite the breach in trust he still loves the boy. And how devastating that realization is. Or, AU where at some point they decide "screw everyone" and run away to Vask or...IDK wherever and live happily in peace without Laurent, the Regent and all their drama. Or, as a narrow, fandom-specific exception to my general DNWs, a modern-day type political AU where the Regent and Laurent are leaders of political parties and it's election season. This way you get all the good political drama but no one has to die. (I love the political drama, not so much the "losers have to die/lose everything" part. This makes the stakes less high I guess, but the emotional fallout doesn't have to be so catastrophic either.)
DNW for this fandom: Laurent. As little of this character as possible, plesae. (He can still be mentioned and stuff, since it might be hard to write something without even mentinoing him, just not a lot of screentime/a significant role, if that makes sense.)
War and Peace (book!verse) Dolokhov/Anatole.
I ship Dolokhov/Anatole SUPER HARD. Dolokhov obviously tries to take care of Anatole in his own way (see scene where he tries to talk Anatole out of running away with Natasha) and canon even says that Anatole “genuinely loves” Dolokhov. Personal headcanon is that Dolokhov takes not just a leading but protector-type role in this relationship, but you can play with that as you like. I think Dolokhov would secretly enjoy being someone’s hero – he’s good at taking care of people he actually loves. I also feel like Anatole would allow him to be himself in a way that he doesn’t get to do elsewhere, because Anatole doesn’t expect him to be righteous nor is he judgmental nor does he care much for things like rank and position. They share interests, they share friends. It just works
. (In fact, if you’d like to see some of my notes/meta on Anatole’s characterization, here’s my Anatole tumblr tag
. It’s not all useful but in case you’re interested and linking to there prevents letter-bloat. On a similar note, this
is probably my most comprehensive Dolokhov characterization post. My general W&P tag is here
You could do anything with these two! Happy fluffy summertime fic, banter, first time, UST (especially at a ball), friendship-turned-more, drunk fooling around. All the hurt/comfort (post-war/Borodino, post-Natasha fiasco, post-duel). Or awfully angsty war!fic. What about that whole Anatole/Natasha thing? How does that fit in? Did it cause a rupture in their relationship or was it a catalyst for realizing they have feelings for each other? Maybe Anatole has a teenage crush on Dolokhov, who ignores it at first because they have a significant age difference. Anatole goes away for some time (abroad?) and comes back a few years later. Suddenly, they’re both adults and maybe this time the tables have turned?
For something more “serious” – having to hide their relationship; maybe Anatole is in denial about having romantic feelings for men? There are some major socioeconomic imbalances in this relationship, but Dolokhov has the upper hand personality and intellect wise and an exploration of how all that translates into power dynamics within the relationship would be cool. Not to say that their relationship has to be flawless. With someone like Dolokhov it’s never going to be. I’m sure there would be plenty of jealousy and cheating and hurting each other (probably unintentional on Anatole’s end and intentional on Dolokhov’s). I’d be up for a kinda-fix-it where Anatole survives the war and well…that’s going to cause its own slew of problems and issues, but maybe a happy ending of sorts if you go in this direction? I do want these two to be happy, but their angst has the potential to be extremely delicious.
Evan/Severus. I haven't request this ship (or this fandom) in a while but this use to be like THE SHIP for me for a while, in HP at least. I love the angst potential here. I wouldn’t mind fluff either, though, if you want. I would love to see these two during the First War, perhaps a progression of their relationship. I would seriously like this to be mutual. You don’t have to ignore canon/Lily, I’m all for Severus/Lily, but once she’s out of the picture, I would love to see Sev having a fulfilling relationship with Evan. Oh, yes, hurt/comfort is your friend :D That being said, how does Sev’s betrayal fit into this? How does that effect him emotionally – knowing you’re betraying your friends and your lover? Does Evan have suspicions? And if he does but can’t bring himself to tell/confront Sev – oh the glorious angst! I wouldn’t mind seeing Sev’s reaction to Evan’s death. It's all about war and coping together and loyalty and conflicted loyalty and maybe some opposites attract (I headcanon Evan as a sort of relatively carefree outgoing social butterfly).
Antonin/Bellatrix. My headcanon is that they are the same age, or about at least, went to school together and were school sweethearts. Bella’s marriage to Roddy was arranged, etc. You don’t have to stick with that at all, though, of course; do with it what you want. I would like it to be at least ultimately mutual, not just a one-sided thing. This can be as romantic or angsty as you want. I would love to see an exploration of their relationship before and/or during the First War but wouldn’t be opposed to Second War fic. I enjoy class difference/conflict motifs with this pairing with the Blacks being quite a bit richer than the Dolohovs even though both families are Pureblood. War romances have a tendency to hit my buttons especially – waiting for each other to come back from missions, desperate pre-battle snogging, watching each other’s back, navigating wartime/Pureblood politics, etc. I will also note that I kinda see Bella’s insanity as largely a product of Azkaban. She can be extremist before then, but please, no psycho-Bella pre-Second War.
Antonin/Pansy. Given the age difference, It would be cool if Antonin was around Lucius’ age (or in that generation, rather than, say Riddle’s). I’m not really looking for this to be a Lolita thing or anything lol, but I do feel like it could be such glorious UST. I kinda prefer UST with this one, though a resolution would be cool too. I kinda see Pansy as being fascinated with Dolohov as an older man and someone who has a lot of authority in the Dark Lord’s ranks. I also would be interested in seeing this from Tony’s POV though, how does he feel about Pansy? Is this more platonic/psudo-romantic where he is all protective of her as a young girl or is it a guilty pleasure sort of attraction to this lovely young woman. I love a strong Pansy, but she’s still very young and I think that will have an impact..
Antonin/Draco. This is sort of like the slash version of Antonin/Pansy lol. Same preference re: age difference for Antonin to be more around Lucius' age than, say Riddle's. I would enjoy seeing a sort of protector/protectee or mentor/mentee relationship develop here. My headcanon for Antonin is that he is a high ranking officer within the DEs and has quite a bit of authority there, so some kind of expansion into that and Draco’s view on it would be interesting. War!romance stuff is always fun too, angst, confusion, doing the wrong things for the right reasons… One of my fave set ups is that Narcissa asks Antonin to give Draco some training (magical combat, etc) either as a general precaution or specifically in light of his assignment in HBP. (And where I see Antonin/Pansy being initiated more by her/from her side, I see this ship as being more of a slow-mutual-coming together. At the very least, I see Draco as an initially-hesitabt party, but still probably the eventual initiator of anything explicitly romantic/sexual.(
Remus/Evan.I think what I like the most about this paring is the possibilities and impossibilities that it presents. Different houses, backgrounds, ideologies etc and to see how that can work together would be wonderful. I suppose it would start as an accident of some sort or perhaps a bet or a set up or something and then evolve into something more. I think both of them are too dedicated to their respective causes to ever switch sides which, I suppose, would preclude a happy ending but I think that's the beauty of this paring - it can be so deliciously psychologically messed up and complicated. It's all about war and hate and desire. It helps that I really like both of these characters.
Male Lawyer/Male Client. Look at those Rules of Professional Conduct violations brewing right there! (Lol, no, but really, there’s an ABA model rule that’s basically like “don’t fuck your clients.”) So like…loyalty kink, codependency, love in high stress situations? Are so my kinks. Maybe the lawyers does criminal defense and he’s stuck with this case for x reason and he doesn’t really want it and he thinks the client is guilty but then gets to know him and slowly realizes that actually, he probably really isn’t. Or maybe they’re fighting the good fight from the start and slowly fall in love through that. Doing inappropriate things in empty courtrooms could be fun. Snark at depositions and during cross-exams. Maybe this case starts out as some boring small-town personal injury gig and then turns into a MURDER CONSPIRACY. Maybe the client is really nervous before he has to testify and the lawyer snogs him to make him feel better? Lol, IDEK.
Prince/Male Diplomat from Enemy Country. So…this could be pretty standard fair enemies-to-in love. My favorite way to have this trope go is when the people involved (realize despite themselves) that they don’t actually, necessarily hate each other or wouldn’t hate each other if only circumstances were different. Maybe there are things they really like or admire about each other but they there are some key ideological, political or loyalty differences between them (So, kinda Romeo-and-Juliet but with more internal conflict where they aren’t at all keen on giving up on their other ideas/loyalties despite being attracted to each other.)
Some things I would love to see explored would be: how they end up falling in love – that process of realizing this person you probably should hate isn’t just ok but you’re really into them and oh no they reciprocate but you still can’t be together because X. Conflicts of loyalties – caring about someone but not exactly being willing to betray your country/family/etc for them; having to make hard choices (and if either has to choose, I see no need for the choice to ALWAYS be in favor of the romantic interests, in fact it would almost be more interesting if it wasn’t, but it’s really the emotional fallout of such a choice that’s compelling). Maybe they decide to secretly work together to bring their warring countries to peace (and maybe they succeed and maybe they don’t). Maybe one (or both) of them initially start the relationship because they’re there to spy on the enemy – and how they manage the situation when the feelings become genuine.
I would prefer a historical or (psudo-historical) fantasy setting, if possible.
These next two ships have a definite, ah, theme. There are several tropes that go well with both: loyalty!kink, secret/forbidden relationships, kinda screwy power dynamics, (where applicable) politics/intrigue…
Also, with these kinds of ships, I have a super-favorite-kind-hits-all-my-buttons type of dynamic. It’s kind of rather specific so feel totally free to ignore me but hey, worth putting it out there. So basically, I love protector/protectee type dynamics but with a twist. The twist being that the “protector” character who is smarter/more competent/more practical/more emotionally stable/stronger personality/etc is the socioeconomically less privileged character with less social power in the relationship. So like here, we’d have the kind of naïve/flighty/idealistic Prince/Boss and his more cynical/practical underling who kind of keeps an eye on him and tries his best to steer the Prince/Boss away from unintentional disasters, even though socially that dynamic is reversed. Haha, IDK, am I making sense? As I said, pretty specific, feel free to ignore. I just really like complicated power dynamics with a hint of trope apparently *shrug*
Prince/His Chamberlain. I wasn’t super good at specifying gender here for the “chamberlain” character, mainly because it seemed self-evident to me, but in case it needs clarifying I did intend for this to be M/M. The Chamberlain character doesn’t have to have this specific position either, he can be like a personal secretary or something. What I was going for, mainly, is someone who is of more or less noble birth/not a servant but serves in a civilian position in the Prince’s household and would have, by demands of the position, a relatively close relationship with the Prince. The specifics are totally up to you to decide. I’m also hoping for a historical, alt/pseudo-historical, or fantasy setting here :) Ok, now the fun part!
So, maybe they’re in a secret relationship? Is it because the society is homophobic? Or maybe it’s because the Prince has to marry/is married to a woman so he can father an heir? Or maybe the problem has nothing to do with gender/sexuality but because people of different social ranks aren’t supposed to be romantically involved?
How do the power dynamics work in this relationships? What power inequalities transfer into the bedroom (metaphorically, it doesn’t have to be during/about sex specifically) and which ones don’t? How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your personal feelings in this sort of relationship? Do other people try to use the Chamberlain character for their own political ambitions in some way and what comes out of that? (Like, what if his family begins to support a rival faction in the government that is looking to stage a coup d’etat?)
I love worldbuilding, especially for fantasy settings. Rituals, balls, customs and social rules, formal/professional relationships that in times of stress or just overtime breakdown and become warmer and more personal… When in doubt, hurt/comfort is your friend and handy default.
I would prefer a fantasy or (pseudo) historical setting here.
Male Boss/Male Secretary. Would love for the boss to be some kind of corporate executive or manager or maybe a lawyer. Maybe the boss character is the head of a company he inherited kind of suddenly and he doesn’t really know what he’s doing? Similar to the previous section (I mean, this is basically the modern-day version more or less), would love to see an exploration of the power dynamics and the balance of the professional and the personal; the conflicts of how appropriate such a relationship would be. Do these two have backstory that ties them together -- went to college together, childhood friends, etc -- or does the relationship bloom exclusively from the working environment? Making difficult choices together, co-reliance and co-dependence, late nights at work that grown into late night takeout fastfood dinners that grow into kissing... Playing the corporate politics field in such a way as to shield each other. All the loyalty kink, tbh. I...realize none of these are very concrete prompts but it's more the dynamics that I'm interested in - I'm excited to see what scenario you come up with to explore them!
So basically, I started shipping these two pretty hard and then…Poniatowski just sold him out. Like damn. But I still ship it :) So…is it a fling? An on-and-off thing? An actually serious relationship that neither wants to admit is serious? Did Poniatowski get rid of Krzysztof in part because he believed he needed to end the relationship but was having a hard time doing it/with self control? I’m a fan of the whole “I did this awful thing but it was totally the right thing to do and I don’t regret it…….but I’m still really sad about it inside” thing. Is Krzysztof mouthy in bed? I feel like he would be. And Poniatowski kinda-sorta goes with it? Because he’s king but Krzysztof never really gave a damn about that and it’s both kinda annoying and refreshing at the same time.Peter/Liza.
Peter/Liza is my het OTP of this fandom. I love that of all the women Peter could have had he chose Liza. Not some flawless, sexy toy but a rough-around-the-edges, “unattractive” girl with a limp who loves what he loves and seems to understand him and knows all the right things to say (in his POV). They make each other so happy - it's adorable. They’re both outcasts in some way: Liza is not the flawless, demure bride prized by society at this time and age; Peter is stuck in a country he cares little for, far from what he considers home, his marriage is unhappy, he’s under the control of a tyrannical aunt… But when these two find each other, it’s like everything else goes away.
I don’t have many specific prompts for this ship, admittadly. I just want fluff, I guess? I want them to be happy, to make each other happy. Oh, maybe Liza is actually in control of this relationship? Not in a creepy manipulative way, but like, she’s the only one who can talk Peter down from one stupid thing or another and she knows that though he might think that all the good ideas are his, they’re actually hers. Maybe an AU of some sort where they manage to run away to Holstein during the coup and go through a period of adjustment but then end up living happily. Or, IDK, an AU where Catherine is removed out of the way somehow (she dies in childbirth, takes Peter up on his offer to go back to Prussia, whatever I’m not picky) and they get married and rule happily together. I don’t think I want too much angst with this ship, or at least, even if there’s angst I’d want a happy ending. Canon ends so heartbreakingly for them that I don’t think I could stand it :/Peter/Brockdorff.
This is my slash OTP for this fandom <3 I even wrote a shipper’s manifesto
in case that’s helpful to anyone? [BE ADVISED there are GIFs, though they are under spoiler cuts.)
Brockdorff is always in the background but also always around, even when it doesn’t seem like he has a “duty” to be. (Or any comprehensible reason? Like when Peter is woken up in the middle of the night to go watch Catherine give birth and Brockdorff is there with him. I mean, other than like providing moral support, why would he be there?) Even if you don’t want to use historical background, Brockdorff seems to be the one person who is always exclusively on Peter’s side. (Well, Liza too.) There are just so many little, subtle things. But the potential in this ship for loyalty kink and hurt/comfort and kinda awkward/messed up power dynamics is through the roof. This could even be a one-sided ship. I love the dynamic of the emotionally vulnerable, mildly daft Prince and his loyal and more competent/composed underling (chamberlain in this case).
You could go fluffy – private, happy moments. Maybe they fly that kite (and watch it burn up in the air!). Maybe the reason Peter mentioned the kite at all as something that would make him happy is because that’s something he and Brockdorff would do as kids back in Holstein before things got complicated. Pre-canon childhood fic in general! Triumphant moments/success during Peter’s short rule and/or grand plans for a brighter future. (Oooh! Their first kiss?) Some cute scenes with Pavel maybe? If they get into a relationship, when/how do they make the switch from formality to informality? (Especially Brockdorff, as Peter is already all over the place with his yous and thous. but Brockdorff is always overproper and I'd love to see how that formality may break down in intense/intimate moments.)
Or all the angst! Brockdorff’s one-sided love or a complicated relationship made even more complicated by Peter’s constantly worsening paranoia and dissatisfaction with everything. Peter having to leave home (Holstein) and everyone/everything he knows behind. Brockdorff dealing with the coup and Peter’s death – when you’ve basically committed and built your entire life around someone, that’s a lot of empty space to suddenly fill when they’re gone. Having to say goodbye when Peter is first called away to Russia (and Brockdorff swearing he’ll come and join him as soon as he can?).
Hurt/comfort would be amazing <3 Aftermath of Peter’s smallpox and all the emotional fallout and insecurity there and/or remaining physical weakness, for more tradition h/c. Or maybe Brockdorff walks in on Peter during a private breakdown/vulnerable moment after he finds out that Catherine is going to have a child after all and that child might very well not be his. Peter’s constantly dealing with a lot – social pressures of being the heir, insecurity/sense of inferiority instilled by Elizabeth’s constant disappointment, homesickness (especially during his first years in Russia), a failed marriage, constant fears about the future. It’s ripe for some hurt/comfort!
