Olympics Angst [Aug. 6th, 2012|01:08 pm]

I need to stop stressing about the Olympics but it seems that that's impossible. Maybe it would be easier if I was around other people who were cheering for the US as well. Instead, I'm surrounded by people cheering for Russia. (My brother's loyalties seem to be divided but he's not very interested wither way it seems.) Also, since I'm currently in Russia the tv coverage is Russian and Russian commentators tend to be utterly horrible. They have a tendency to be mean, nasty, whiny, enjoy playing the victim and they seem to experience a special joy when it's the US that gets beaten. Not that I expected any better -- Russian attitudes in everyday life are very similar, honestly. Usually, it's just funny how much they seem to blow up the whole "America is our enemy" thing when no one in the US really cares about them THAT MUCH. They like to think that they're the center of the earth and everyone's likes and dislikes, plans, goals, intrigues etc revolve around them. Anyway. Usually, it's almost funny. Right now, it's annoying. I guess I just need to stop caring so much - it's just sports not the end of the world for goodness sake.

We did well in swimming but our male gymnasts fell through and things aren't looking too wonderful on the track and field front either (although it's a bit early to tell). Now it looks like we're going to lose the poll vault to the Russians. I want to go have tea but they've got the Olympics on in the kitchen and I don't want to hear the gloating. I can't stand it.

Come on Team USA pull it together for God's sake! I can stand us losing the overall/gold medal count to the Chinese. I think I'll cry if we lose to the Russians.

alskjfd I really don't want us to lose to China ;_; I don't get all that much into the Olympics, but I really don't want to lose to them. I just don't know why. Maybe because they won so much last time?

I actually find it kind of hilarious that Russia has such a rivalry with us, but the States have moved on to our new communist enemy rival, China.

The broadcast here is terrible as well, but for different reasons. Everything is on tape delay because of the eight-hour time difference, which makes spoilers a very serious problem. They also are heavily biased toward showing swimming and womans gymnastics events (strangely, they don't show focus on the men at all) and beach volleyball, but they don't fill the time between those events with anything but talk shows. I am so sick of hearing about Michael Phelps and the US lady gymnasts!

I really wanted to watch the whitewater kayaking and handball and archery events, but I can't find them anywhere :(

We have a rivalry with China? lol. I guess in sports we do. I mean, I don't WANT us to lose to China of course but I'd get over it pretty quickly. With Russia it's different. They'd gloat all August, (They are really ridiculous with the whole hating on the US, it's a little pathetic honestly.)

We get live coverage for a lot of events in the evenings. We mostly get swimming and gymnastics coverage (although we saw the men and the women), there's lots of track and field now too since it's gotten under way. We don't see a lot of archery or anything like that unless it's a special sports channel or something. I'm guessing that's becasue those sports aren't popular so they don't want to "waste" the air time on them.
