|I like fantasy and fandom but I'm not a geek, thanks :)

What is this trend where people in fandom are called "geeks"...by other people in fandom. Especially fantasy (or sifi, I guess) or videogame fandom? Like, I see meta pieces saying "we in fandom" followed by "in our geek culture" and I'm like <_< I can kind of see how "geek" as a term can be used at some hardcore sifi fans, but fantasy? How does writing/reading fanfic or making GIF sets of Game of Thrones make you a geek? I'm just genuinely confused because "where I come from" that's not what a "geek" is. I certainly don't identify as that...
I mean, I know the term no longer means exclusively "kinda-nerdy, super-techy, socially awkward kid." Like people will say "I'm a total film geek!" People on my dance team will refer to themselves as ballroom geeks sometimes. I do that too. The meaning is like "we're super intense about this subject." But using "geek" for all of fandom, or at least all of fantasy/sifi/video game fandom makes no sense to me *shrug*
